With DME you do not have to limit your users’ freedom to choose a mobile device on the grounds of manageability. On the contrary, DME accommodates devices of most brands, models, and platforms. For a complete overview, see Supported Devices.
Any device that connects to the DME system and is permitted access through the collaboration system (Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Domino) is automatically created in the DME system (depending on a setting – see Adding devices to DME below). The following are some of the characteristics of the DME management interface.
Simple and secure browser interface:
- Control devices individually or in groups and classes. You can base a group on an existing LDAP user group, you can build your own, or combine.
- Information about the device is transferred to DME: IMEI number, installed applications, OS, hardware properties, etc.
- You can quickly search for a specific device or a class of devices.
- Key information about the device and the DME client installed on the device is readily available.
- A full log of events on the server is kept and is searchable from within the Web interface, making it easier to support your users.
- Send OTA configurations (for instance GPRS settings) and SMS messages to any device.
Security:
- Control DME settings on the devices.
- Block access to applications and network interfaces on the devices.
- Erase all data on the device remotely, in case the device is lost or stolen.
See Security for more information.
Cost containment
- Data is compressed to reduce transfer costs.
- Devices can be set up to use WLAN when available, allowing free data transfer.
- DME logs the usage of the device within the following areas:
- Data
- Voice
- Messaging (SMS/MMS)
- GPRS
- Use the built-in reports, or build your own traffic analyses using the bundled DME Mobile Analyzer reporting tools.
- The reports can be used to monitor cost of ownership, discover abnormal use, and get a realistic view of actual usage – which in turn can be used when negotiating telecommunications rates.
Provisioning:
- Update software automatically when user logs on to DME.
- One-click push of software to devices.
- Self-provisioning – let users request software downloads via SMS.
See Deployment for more information.
Adding devices to DME
You can set up the DME system to add devices to the system automatically when they connect for the first time. Keep in mind that they are only able to connect if they are in fact authenticated as users by the collaboration system (Notes or Exchange). For added security, you can specify that new devices should be locked when they connect for the first time, meaning that the DME administrator must manually unlock the user before he or she can start using DME.
Furthermore, you can import a list of devices to the system, or you can create devices manually.
