Easy Deployment

Freedom and ease-of-use have been key guiding principles in the development of DME. These principles are also evident in the deployment of the DME software to the users. The primary focus is to make the installation and set-up of DME on the devices hassle-free.

We have narrowed the installation process down to two simple steps:

  1. Upload software to the DME server.
  2. Supply a download link to the devices.

The process of distributing software to users is the same for existing devices (for instance if a new version of the client is available), or for new devices (where DME must be installed for the first time).

Upload
To make the software available to the devices, you (the DME administrator) use the Web-based server administration interface to upload the software on the server. While doing this, you assign some properties to the software – a name of the software package (e.g. “DME Client 1.10”), the device type to which it applies (e.g. “S60” or “Windows Mobile”), and possibly an SMS code.

Distribution: Mark for installation
If the DME client is already installed on a device, but a new version of the client has been made available, you can mark the software package for installation on one or many selected devices. The first time the device connects with the server, the new software is downloaded to the client, and the update process is started automatically.

Distribution: Self-provisioning
By assigning an SMS code to the software, you enable self-provisioning. This means that you can distribute instructions to your users how to get the software – by posting the instructions on the corporate intranet, by e-mail, or otherwise. All the user has to do is to send an SMS to a specified number (the number of your server’s SMS modem) and supply the specified SMS code. The user will then receive a download link for the software as an SMS. The link is valid for a limited time. By following the link, the user downloads and installs the software – a one-click process.

Distribution: Push
You can also choose to push the software to new or to existing devices. A “new” device is a device which does not yet exist in the DME system. A button in the Web administration interface lets you choose to install a software package on new or on existing devices.

  • If you choose to install on new devices, you are asked to enter the phone numbers of the devices. When you click OK, an SMS or WAP push with a download link is sent to the devices.
  • If you choose to install on existing devices, you are asked to select the devices you wish to install the software on, from the list of devices. Finish the process by choosing how you want to notify the devices of the new software: By SMS, by WAP, or by marking for installation (see above).

Naturally, it is also possible to distribute software by attaching the software to e-mails, by distributing memory cards, through the file sync feature, or by using a cable connection.
